In a 2025 survey by JUSTCapital, Americans ranked “acts ethically at the leadership level” as the second highest on a list of issues to consider in choosing which firm to do business with.

But what does it mean when a company describes itself as “ethical”? The word can have many interpretations — and how does a company’s ethics benefit clients?

“While ethics can be extremely subjective…across demographics it means being open, and honest about business operations, companies doing what they said they were going to do, not misleading people or covering up unjust acts, and operating with a greater sense of corporate responsibility and good citizenship.” — JUST Capital

The ROI Project by IO Sustainability and Babson Social Innovation Lab found that a solid corporate responsibility plan in large companies can increase employee engagement by up to 7.5%. However, it can also increase productivity by up to 13%, which benefits clients.

Building a Unique Corporate Culture at Gemini Legal

Clients often notice the effects of these corporate initiatives, even if they can’t immediately name the source. Gemini Legal clients, for instance, describe employees in reviews and client satisfaction surveys as “approachable,” “responsive,” and “genuinely invested.”

The secret? That culture of giving flows into everything, from how employees treat each other to how they communicate with clients.

When asked about the culture at Gemini Legal, Human Resources Events Coordinator Sheri Youngquist, an employee of 6 years at the company, said:

“It comes from the top down. The executive team all has a heart for volunteering and helping people. They roll up their sleeves when needed. It’s a great example and it sets the tone for the company.”

Tony Daugherty, president of Gemini Legal, for example, was recognized in 2025 for his philanthropic efforts with a Lifetime Achievement in Corporate Citizenship award from the Sacramento Business Journal.

That ethos is also reflected in multiple formal programs. This also guides how employees are trained to see their role with clients. Both of these decisions reflect the fact that ethics and corporate responsibility are part of the company’s core values.

Corporate Donations

One of the more visible company programs is on-going corporate support of Kids’ Chance, a non-profit that supports the children of injured workers — a cause that hits close to home for a company that focuses on injury law, including workers’ compensation.

However, Gemini Legal also offers employees the opportunity to direct where donations should go, via the G.I.V.E. (Gemini Involving Valuable Employees) program which donates funds to employee-chosen charities each year.

In 2024, Gemini Legal hit an impressive milestone: 100% of all employees participated in the G.I.V.E. program.

“It’s one thing to have a corporate giving policy. It’s another thing entirely when every single person gets involved,”said Youngquist, reiterating the importance of corporate social responsibility among employees.

Examples from 2025 G.I.V.E. submissions and the employee’s reason for the choosing this organization include:

  • Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) — “During my time in foster care, a CASA worker made a very positive impact on my life. This project provides training and funding for adults to advocate for foster youth. It’s personal — I’ve seen what it can do.”

  • CHISPA Project — “This charity sets up libraries throughout Honduras, providing books in Spanish for children who otherwise wouldn’t have access. They’ve taught over 18,000 children how to read and develop a love for books.”

  • Best Friends Animal Sanctuary — “About 20 years ago, my oldest daughter made a trip to Best Friends in Utah to deliver handmade pet treats, and to have a tour of their facility. Best Friends is a no-kill shelter.”

Volunteering as a Benefit

Most companies offer health insurance and paid time off. As part of its goal to reward giving back to others, Gemini Legal adds something you won’t find in your average benefits brochure: 40 hours of paid community service time for each employee, every year.

Some recent volunteer locations include:

Gemini Legal sees this program as an investment in their employees and their community, as well as a reflection of their commitment to ethical practices.

When employees feel they are making a difference, they’re more satisfied in their day-to-day work, which translates to better overall customer service for Gemini Legal clients.

Ethical Voucher Practices

When firms refer Supplemental Job Displacement Benefit (SDJB) voucher recipients to Gemini Legal for vocational counseling, they can relax knowing their firm’s reputation is in good hands, thanks to the company’s focus on ethical business practices.

Recent evidence has surfaced that some voucher services have abused the system and their clients. Voucher claimants found their retaining funds for schooling were depleted without their knowledge or consent, signatures forged on documents and sent to bill insurance companies, and in some cases victims who had never worked with a counselor had their identities used to submit invoices for fraudulent counseling services. Others still were coerced into choosing particular schools that give kickbacks to the voucher service.

However, at Gemini Legal, the voucher practices start with empathy and education for the injured worker and continue with the promise of unlimited choice of any state-certified vocational school or program—there’s no risk of kickbacks narrowing their options.

Certified, in-house vocational counselors are at the heart of Gemini Legal voucher team, and they are on the official Department of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) list, available for any voucher recipient to choose from. Because ethical practices guide our process, there’s no risk of reputational damage by association.

“We understand the importance of this program to injured workers who are counting on us. Gemini Legal has a General Counsel who uses their extensive knowledge to ensure we stay updated and compliant with regulations. We are a counseling firm that is proactive; we work closely with the state Return to Work Supplement department to ensure we are one step ahead. If we see something we can do better, we are more than open to doing it.” — David Duran, Certified In-House Vocational Counselor, Gemini Legal

"If you have somebody who's ethical and who does everything in a transparent legal way and works with the DIR [Department of Industrial Relations], works with the adjusters, and works with you, then you'll know that you're taken care of." — Nadia Dow, Certified In-House Vocational Counselor, Gemini Legal

An Ethical Company is Here to Stay

Ethical behavior is just good business. A culture of corporate caring results in a stronger, more loyal workforce and more stability for the clients who purchase and partner with them. When it’s “just business,” the human element of “why we do what we do” can get lost, and company culture erodes.

According to the LPN 2024 Benchmark of Ethical Culture Report, Companies with the strongest ethical cultures outperform those with weaker ethical cultures by 50%, and organizations with strong ethical cultures are 2.6x more likely to be adaptable – a critical determinant of a company’s resilience.

The data confirms that an ethical culture is a primary driver of business resilience. For Gemini Legal, these commitments are more than a mission statement—they are the framework for the operational excellence our clients expect.

Gemini Legal has spent the last 20 years proving that integrity and performance are not mutually exclusive. By prioritizing both, clients can be confident of a higher standard of service and a more stable partnership.
